Recent research on the buildup of rocks from small dust grains has reaffirmed that grain growth in protoplanetary disks should occur quickly. Calculation of growth rates have been made for a variety of growth processes and generally predict high probabilities of sticking in low-velocity collisions that may be brought about in a number of ways in protoplanetary disks. Laboratory experiments have...
متن کاملOn the Submillimeter Opacity of Protoplanetary Disks
Solid particles with the composition of interstellar dust and power-law size distribution dn/da ∝ a−p for a ≤ amax with amax & 3λ and 3 < p < 4 will have submm opacity spectral index β(λ) ≡ d lnκ/d ln ν ≈ (p−3)βism, where βism ≈ 1.7 is the opacity spectral index of interstellar dust material in the Rayleigh limit. For the power-law index p ≈ 3.5 that characterizes interstellar dust, and that ap...
متن کاملThe photophoretic sweeping of dust in transient protoplanetary disks
Context. Protoplanetary disks start their lives with a dust free inner region where the temperatures are higher than the sublimation temperature of solids. As the star illuminates the innermost particles, which are immersed in gas at the sublimation edge, these particles are subject to a photophoretic force. Aims. We examine the motion of dust particles at the inner edge of protoplanetary disks...
متن کاملDust Size Growth and Settling in a Protoplanetary Disk
We have studied dust evolution in a quiescent or turbulent protoplanetary disk by numerically solving coagulation equation for settling dust particles, using the minimum mass solar nebular model. As a result, if we assume an ideally quiescent disk, the dust particles settle toward the disk midplane to form a gravitationally unstable layer within 2× 103–4× 10yr at 1–30 AU, which is in good agree...
متن کاملWhat can we learn about protoplanetary disks from analysis of mid - infrared carbonaceous dust emission ? ⋆
Context. The disks of gas and dust that form around young stars and can lead to planet formation contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and very small grains (VSGs). Aims. In this Paper we analyze the mid-infrared (mid-IR) emission of these very small dust particles in a sample of 12 protoplanetary disks. Our goal is twofold: first we want to characterize the properties of these partic...
متن کاملMolecular Hydrogen Emission from Protoplanetary Disks II. Effects of X-ray Irradiation and Dust Evolution
Detailed models for the density and temperature profiles of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks are constructed by taking into account X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation from a central T Tauri star, as well as dust size growth and settling toward the disk midplane. The spatial and size distributions of dust grains in the disks are numerically computed by solving the coagulation equation fo...
